Retreatreefrest opened in 1991 as a single villa on a sheltered bay, and expanded only when we were certain growth would not dilute what made it worth the journey. Thirty-five years later, we keep 60 rooms and suites, four kitchens and one gaming room, and we still decline more bookings than we accept.
Luxury, for us, is not marble and gold leaf. It is the second coffee that arrives unasked for, the driver who recalls your name, the table kept an hour past closing because conversation had not finished. We recruit for that instinct and we keep the people who possess it.
Most of our guests return, and that is the entire strategy. We would rather 68 percent of a smaller number come back each year than pursue a larger audience that never does.
